An original linen backed advertising poster for the inaugural showing of
Cyrano de Bergerac a theatrical play written entirely in verse. A loosely fictionalized story of the real Cyrano written by Edmond Rostand. The play has been adapted to film, television, and opera. In 2008 Anthony Burgess adapted and translated the 1970s play into a movie.
Painted by Lucien Metivet, an artist who studied classical art before turning his talents to illustration both in the form of posters like this and regular contributions to satirical magazines of his era.
