An elegant French sterling silver compact case by Hermès Paris, distinguished by its refined linear design, exceptional construction, and understated luxury characteristic of the celebrated Parisian maison.
The rectangular case is crafted in silver and features a finely ribbed/engine-turned exterior, with closely spaced linear decoration extending across the lid and sides. The restrained geometric treatment gives the piece a distinctly Art Deco to early Mid-Century aesthetic, allowing the quality of the metalwork and proportions to take precedence over ornamentation.
The front is fitted with a contrasting gold-tone thumb clasp, providing a subtle and sophisticated accent against the silver body. Opening the case reveals a fitted beveled mirror within the lid and a polished silver interior. The interior edge is clearly signed “HERMÈS – PARIS”, while additional French assay and maker’s marks are present on the interior components.
Particularly attractive is the quality of the construction: the finely articulated hinge is almost seamlessly incorporated into the ribbed design, while the precisely fitted lid and substantial silver body reflect the exacting craftsmanship for which Hermès has long been known.
The case retains an appealing vintage surface with light scratches, minor oxidation and handling wear consistent with age and use. These marks have been left intact rather than aggressively polished, preserving the character of the piece. The mirror also shows age-related surface characteristics and does have one minor chip underneath the frame of the mirror.
A sophisticated example of 20th-century Hermès silver, equally suited to a collection of Hermès objets de luxe, French silver, vanity accessories, or decorative desk objects. Its restrained design also makes it particularly appealing for contemporary display.
