A striking example of early 21st-century Italian lighting design, this PizzaKobra table lamp was designed by internationally celebrated architect and designer Ron Arad for iGuzzini Illuminazione of Italy.
Created circa 2007, the PizzaKobra is as much a kinetic sculptural object as it is a functional light. Formed from a continuous articulated chrome-finished tubular structure, the lamp can be arranged in a number of configurations: coiled nearly flat into its distinctive “pizza” form, partially raised, or extended upward into a dramatic serpentine silhouette. The result is an exceptionally playful yet sophisticated piece of industrial design.
The lamp’s circular head incorporates a series of recessed LED light sources on its underside, directing illumination downward while maintaining the clean, futuristic appearance of the polished metal exterior. When illuminated, the warm light reflects beautifully across the highly polished chrome surface, emphasizing the sinuous curves and mechanical articulation of the design.
One of the most compelling aspects of the PizzaKobra is its transformation. When closed, the lamp becomes an almost architectural spiral of concentric polished metal rings. When opened, the articulated tubular construction rises organically from the base, terminating in the circular illuminated head. Arad’s characteristic interest in movement, flexibility and unconventional form is immediately evident.
The polished chrome finish gives the lamp a distinctly Space Age and contemporary Italian character, while the ingenious articulated construction allows it to function equally well as a practical desk or accent light and as a sculptural design object.
The original electrical components are retained, including the iGuzzini LED converter, marked for LED loads and identifying the Italian manufacturer.
