An exceptional and highly decorative pair of French Napoleon III period bronze chenets, dating to the mid-19th century and conceived in the richly historicist taste so closely associated with Second Empire interiors.
Each chenet is architecturally composed around a dramatic winged female sphinx/caryatid figure, modeled with remarkable sculptural detail. The figures are shown in a seated, forward-leaning pose, their finely cast faces framed by elaborate coiffures of braided hair, scrolling ornaments and classical adornments. Large stylized wings sweep upward and backward into the vertical supports, creating a strong sense of movement while integrating the figural and architectural elements into a unified design.
The figures rest above boldly modeled lion-mask terminal supports, their paws positioned upon scrolling architectural elements. The forward bases extend into substantial gilt-bronze platforms with shaped terminals and engraved or cast foliate decoration, lending the pair both visual weight and a highly finished appearance.
Behind each figure rises a tall, elaborately cast upright standard incorporating acanthus scrolls, classical pilasters, floral and fruiting motifs, architectural moldings and urn-form finials.
