Vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Travel Alarm Clock — Original Box & Leather Case — Circa 1960s
A superb and highly collectible vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox manual-wind travel alarm clock, dating to approximately the 1960s, complete with its original fitted leather carrying case and original Jaeger-LeCoultre presentation box.
This handsome mid-century timepiece embodies the understated elegance and technical ingenuity for which Jaeger-LeCoultre has long been celebrated. Designed as a portable travel clock, the Memovox combines traditional mechanical timekeeping with the practical luxury of a mechanical alarm function, making it an ideal companion for the sophisticated traveller of the period.
The clock features a beautifully proportioned gold-tone cushion-form case surrounding a classic silvered/cream dial. The dial is distinctly mid-century in character, with applied gold-tone geometric hour markers, finely printed minute divisions and elegant hands. The Jaeger-LeCoultre signature is prominently displayed beneath 12 o'clock, while SWISS MADE appears along the lower edge of the dial.
One of the defining features of this model is its distinctive two-crown configuration. One crown controls the conventional time-setting and winding functions, while the second operates the celebrated Memovox mechanical alarm mechanism. The central alarm indication allows the desired alarm time to be selected directly from the dial.
The clock is powered by a traditional manual-wind mechanical movement and is presently running. As with all vintage mechanical clocks and watches, long-term timekeeping accuracy and alarm performance cannot be guaranteed unless recently professionally serviced.
Particularly desirable is the survival of the clock's original fitted brown leather travel case. The case was designed so the clock could be securely carried and then opened to create an attractive bedside or desktop presentation. The leather exhibits authentic age-related wear, patina and surface character consistent with decades of use, adding considerably to the vintage appeal of the piece rather than detracting from it.
Also included is the original burgundy Jaeger-LeCoultre presentation box, bearing the firm's period gold-tone branding. The presence of both the original box and fitted travel case makes this a notably complete example and significantly enhances its desirability to collectors.
The clock itself displays expected vintage wear including light scratches, surface marks and aging to the case and dial consistent with its circa-1960s date. The leather case and exterior presentation box likewise show age-related wear, as clearly illustrated in the accompanying photographs. We have intentionally retained this original character rather than cosmetically restoring the piece.
Details: Jaeger-LeCoultre, Switzerland; Memovox travel alarm clock; circa 1960s; manual-wind mechanical movement; mechanical alarm complication; dual-crown operation; silvered/cream dial with applied gold-tone markers; gold-tone case; original fitted brown leather carrying/display case; original Jaeger-LeCoultre presentation box; Swiss made; presently running.
A wonderful example of mid-century Swiss horology, combining Jaeger-LeCoultre's mechanical expertise with elegant portable design. Complete vintage travel clocks retaining both their fitted leather cases and branded outer boxes are increasingly difficult to find, making this an especially appealing piece for the collector of Jaeger-LeCoultre, vintage travel clocks, or classic mid-century design.
